Cadillac Ranch and RV Museum

August 1

On May 29, when we started this journey, August seemed a long, long way away! Zip-pop, it is here, and boy is it hot! We are regretting these two day stays in the heat, but we did three neat things today.
First, we ate lunch at the famous Big Texan Steak Ranch. It is the home of the free 72 oz. steak dinner to anyone who can eat the steak, a salad, a roll, potato, and shrimp. The list consists of hundreds who have done it successfully. I cannot imagine!!! The steaks were really good, and because we went at lunch, they were much cheaper! It was a fun time.
Then we went to the Cadillac Ranch about 13 miles from the campground. We had seen it as we drove into Amarillo and wanted to go back for photos. A Texas, eccentric millionaire commissioned this piece of art was completed in 1974. The caddies range from 1948 to 1963. They were moved from their original location in 1997 to avoid the city's expansion. They were and are on the old Route 66. Shortly after the work was completed, people started scratching their names or spray painting on them, so now it is welcomed. Also, anything valuable was stolen from them, and the wheels had to be welded on to prevent theft. The fields all around it are barren because of the draught. We have even seen the fields with the irrigation systems barren because of wells gone dry.
Next we went to the RV Museum located at an RV dealership. There were some cool, old RV's in there. Hayden enjoyed getting in the driver's seat of the rv used in the movie RV, starring Robin Wlliams. We would have stayed longer, but the building was not air conditioned. The outside temp was 104 today, so we did not linger.
Any way, it was a hot day filled with some cool things!
